It is a fact that a service member facing criminal charges will be assigned a military defense counsel at no expense.  However, it may be in the service member’s best interest to hire civilian military defense counsel.  The importance of hiring the right attorney to defend you was highlighted in an article published in the Army Times, 19 December 2005, titled, “Hiring Civilian Attorneys: The Costs Pay Off, Soldiers Say.”
